Antique Shops in Southern Maine - Part 3

Next stop - Blacksmith’s Antique Mall.

Even the building is an antique! Betty Hutchins and her son, David, are the sixth and seventh generation of Hutchins who have made a living here. When The Cliff House opened in 1872, it was where guests could get their horses shoed and wagons repaired. Later it became a Chevy dealership. Now it is inviting The Cliff House guests back to shop its long rooms filled with treasures.

The staff is very helpful and cheery. Conversations floated by on laughter like cartoon balloons. This is a fun place to shop or browse.

You will find dishes, furniture, clothing, and endless collections - once treasured - now priced so that you can start your own collection. Looking for a fur coat? I saw one. Want a china tea set? I found one. One woman told me, “We have one of everything, but it might not be here tomorrow!” That did it. I went back to the front and picked up The Boy’s King Arthur published in 1933 with nine fabulous illustrations by N. C. Wyeth! My favorite plate shows the fury of knights on horseback colliding at great speed and Sir Mador’s spear breaking “all to pieces.” I could almost hear sound leap from the page. This book will be the cornerstone of my grandson’s library. Now, can I keep it until Christmas? Yes, because I plan to read it a couple of times first.
