History
THE CLIFF HOUSE STORY
For almost 150 years, Cliff House has offered iconic ocean views and incomparable Maine escapes to generations of New England travelers. Today, Cliff House is proud to continue the traditions of warm hospitality first established by the Weare family when they first opened the resort in the 1870s.
A SELECTION OF MILESTONES
1866 - The opening of the new Maine & Boston railroad spurs Elsie Jane, wife of Captain Theodore Weare, to purchase land on Bald Head Cliff and begin planning a resort. 1869 Elsie’s brother, Captain Charles Perkins, begins building the first Cliff House with wood milled in their own sawmill on Beach Street in Ogunquit. 1872 Elsie Jane opens Cliff House, with summer rates as high as $6 per week, including three meals a day.
1920s and 1930s - Cliff House thrived through the roaring 20s, as well as the precarious 30s.
1941 - During World War II, the U.S. Army took over the property, built a radar station, and kept a 24-hour-a-day vigil for Nazi submarines in the coastal waters. The installation on Bald Head Cliff was considered so important that the Weare Family was barred from their own land for the duration of the conflict. 1948 Cliff House re-opens again as an exclusive ocean-front resort following the war, after some necessary refurbishments.
1990 - The Cliff House experiences a dramatic expansion with additional buildings, rooms, and amenities, beginning a process of transformation that will ultimately lead to today’s resort.
2015-17 - Cliff House closes its doors after the 2015 season to begin a landmark transformation, debuting in 2016 as one of New England’s most stunning luxury resort destinations open year-round for the first time ever.
Since Elsie Jane first realized her dream and opened The Cliff House in 1872, there have been many developments to this iconic Maine resort. Sensitivity to the changing needs and expectations of our guests and a willingness to evolve have always been the hallmarks of the Cliff House success story, but Elsie Jane’s principles endure to this day: clean rooms, fine food, fresh air, and personal hospitality, all in an incomparable setting that cannot be replicated.
